Test Taking Tips and Techniques

Test taking can be a stressful experience, but there are things you can do to improve your performance and reduce anxiety. Here are some test taking tips and techniques that can help you succeed:

  • Arrive Early

Do your best to get there at least ten minutes before the exam. This provides you time to address any potential problems. Before the test starts, you can sit back and relax or practice meditation if there are no issues. Getting there early may also allow you to select the greatest seat in the room. You might like to be seated towards the front so that you can keep up with events, or you might function best in a secluded area close to a window. Once you’ve located a seat, organize yourself and get ready, both mentally and physically.

When taking an online exam, arrive at least 10 minutes early to make sure you have everything you need and that the technology is functional.

  • Keep a watch on

Nowadays, many of us no longer wear watches in the age of smartphones. It’s possible that you won’t be permitted to use your phone throughout an exam, not even to check the time. Wearing a watch will allow you to manage yourself and keep track of the time.

  • Read the whole exam paper

Before you begin, take a brief look over the complete test. By doing this, you’ll be able to comprehend the test’s format and spot any questions that could take more or less time. After reading the test, you can make a plan for how you’ll approach each section to make sure you can finish it all in the given time.

  • Respond to the inquiries you are most familiar with first

Do a first pass through the test whenever you can to respond to the “easy” questions you are familiar with right away. On this initial pass, skip any questions that you can’t quickly respond to. Address those first which you can answer in one writing.

  • Respond to the Questions You skipped

After completing the first pass, you must now go back and respond to the questions you missed. The best-case scenario is that you might discover that some of these questions aren’t as difficult as you first believed. At this stage of the exam, your mind is warmed up, and you are attentive and concentrated. And perhaps answering the questions that came to you naturally brought back the information you needed for these queries.

  • Review before submitting the exam

Once you’ve done the test, go through it once more. Make sure you’ve responded to the inquiries you might have first overlooked. You may want to double-check your work again depending on how much time is left. Make sure you answered the questions accurately, and proofread any written responses for errors. Finally, don’t forget to provide your name or any other vital identifying information.

Test taking tips and techniques for short-answer questions

Your performance may occasionally be impacted by the exam’s format. With exams that need you to give brief responses, you can benefit more from the following test-taking advice:

  • Using the study material, make an effort to anticipate potential exam questions.
  • Answer every question honestly, even if you only know part of the answer; you might still be given credit for it.
  • Start with the simpler questions and return to the more challenging ones later; you might find context in other questions that will serve as a reminder of the solutions to the more challenging ones.
  • Carefully read every word in the question.
  • Instead of making questions longer than they need to be, directly respond to each one.

Multiple-choice test taking tips and techniques

Even if multiple-choice examinations don’t demand that you come up with the answers on your own, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are simpler. Usually, you’ll have four options to choose from, and one (or more, or none at all) of them is the right answer. Following are some pointers for multiple-choice exams:

  • Carefully read each response as there is a chance that the two are slightly different.
  • To increase your confidence that you will select the correct response, attempt to come up with the answer to the question before reading the responses.
  • If you don’t have the answers to any of the questions, you can skip them and return to them later.
  • Don’t rely on patterns, such as presuming there won’t be any more “A” responses because there have already been three “A” answers.
  • If you’re unsure, choose the two options that are directly opposed to one another; often, one of them will turn out to be the correct choice.
  • Highlight any easily identifiable terms in the question that could help in your ability to recall solutions from your notes.
